He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1974. He represented Iowa in congress for 35 years. He was in the 5th Congressional District until 1984. When he challenged the opposing Senator and won. He was the first democrat to win a fifth term in Senate. Currently he is the Chairman of Health, Education, Labor, & Pensions. One of his accomplishments was finding the Tiger Cages in Con Son Island, where prisoners that were mostly students, were held and tortured. Harkin’s was advised to keep the pictures and information to himself, but instead published his finding to Life Magazine and helped in the release of the Prisoners.
Mike Enzi
Ranking Member Michael Enzi Mike Enzi is a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee for 13 years. He is the 20th Senator that Wyoming has had. Enzi was the sixth Chairman of the Committee from 2005-2007. Right now he serves as a Ranking Member during 2010. At the moment he is focusing on ensuring the safety of workers in the workplace. Enzi has also made many different efforts in the battle against AIDS. He also works a lot on trying to open Cuba for a travel destination. He wants to do this for trade and new ideas from their culture. Enzi also played a very large role in the Healthcare Reform Act in the 111th Congress. He used many different specific examples in order to improve healthcare for many Americans. It would make healthcare more equal between Americans. It would give the average American much more control over their healthcare stuff. It would also reduce the cost of healthcare greatly.
